Today is a momentous day in Australia . . . with the passing of legislation in the Australian Capitol Territory to allow same sex marriage! Well done to the members of the ACT parliament who were brave enough to push this though, even if it was only a narrow victory!
Of course, the Federal Government is now promising to take it to the High Court and have it overturned, but even if only for a brief time it appears that the will of the people has been heard!
Woo-hoo!!!!!
The A-G says they’re challenging the law in the High Court to ‘maintain national unformity of marriage laws’.
The logical corollary then is that if they lose they will introduce the ACT law nationally.
I want to see Tony baby do that!
You really think he’ll do that? LOL
What I’d like to see happen is for every member of Parliament to get a feel from their electorate as to what their constituents want, then collate that and see exactly where the country stands on the issue. THEN for the Parliament to allow a conscience vote based on what their constituents actually want…
Sadly, that won’t either! *sigh*
What the A-G’s chances in the High Court? Here in the US, prospects would be poor. “Uniformity” is a weak argument, with a few exceptions such as interstate commerce.
That’s hard too say … although the bill that was passed was supposed to have been carefully worded so that it would survive any challenge. We’ll just have to see what happens!
In the mean time, there are two other states making noises about trying to put similar bills forward! Interesting times ahead, methinks! 😉
